A 35mm Slide Show

After graduating from college in NY in 1964, Dick started showing his “light sculptures” in NYC. These Light Machines as they came to be known were in translucent plastic cubes, pyramids, cylindrical columns and spheres. Dick showed in many major group shows in NYC, and was represented by the Howard Wise Gallery. The introduction to his show catalogue was written by Thomas Hoving, Parks Commissioner for NYC and former Curator of the Met.

A trip to the Fillmore East Concert Facility in NYC introduced Dick to the Joshua Light Show and he was determined to figure out how Josh had accomplished his animated light show. Not knowing how, Dick figured it out on his own, and in so doing developed some techniques he had never seen before. Two of these techniques, one using a square clear plastic tray with 2.5” high sides and plastic tubing with which to introduce and evacuate the liquids, allowed Dick to provide much longer liquid shows then could be presented with clock crystal faces or trays or containers with no flow through capability. The other technique was encapsulating liquids into 35mm slides. After 40 years these slides still work their magic.

Recently Dick was asked to come out of retirement and produce a “60’s” psychedelic light show. After getting all his projection equipment, slides and chemicals out of storage he practiced to see if he could still “ride the bike”… Voila, he could. So many people were impressed by his show and wanted more that he decided to build a web site where he could offer his art for sale on DVD’s.

And so it begins, Dick left NYC for Miami FL in 1972 and moved to Santa Fe NM in 1979 where he currently lives on 12 acres of land on the Santa Cruz River, this land is held in trust as a conservation easement.
